Így került képbe 1981-ben David Lynch, mint író-rendező (aki emiatt George Lucas ajánlatát utasította vissza, hogy rendezze meg A Jedi visszatért). Ezt követően Ridley Scottot bízták meg az írással, ő azonban végül inkább kiszállt a projektből.
Laurentiis magát Herbertet kérte fel a forgatókönyv elkészítésére, ám az túl hosszú lett, ezért elutasították. A producer egyike volt a hollywoodi filmipar nagyágyúinak, megannyi kasszasiker fűződött már a nevéhez a hetvenes években is. Ezután került a Dűne 1978-ban az olasz filmmogulhoz, Dino De Laurentiishez.
